"和比戰難"不只出現在中國與日本的對抗，更是胡先生對中國歷史的透視。

以1948年1月3日的日記為例：

".....我說，Dr. Stuart (案：司徒雷)到今天還沒有拋棄他的和平夢？

蕭君說，"三百年來，中國一切大爭執都能得和平解決，以此次不能和？"

我大笑，問到："三百年來，那一次是和平解決？你說的和平，那是一邊完全屈服。"
