Tonight's Art Moment is "Rose Tower" by Giorgio de Chirico from 1913. De Chirico's paintings anticipated Surrealism by a decade and strongly influenced Surrealist artists. Like the Surrealists, de Chirico believed that the unconscious and dream world offered access to metaphysical realities that transcended the apparent logic of physical reality. Rose Tower is one of a series focusing on Italian piazzas. Mysteriously deserted, the piazza is dramatically illuminated by an invisible source. Arcaded galleries and a looming, solitary tower cast long, ominous shadows. Only the distant equestrian statue suggests human presence. De Chirico's deep colors are rarely seen in reality. These bizarre juxtapositions of imagery rendered in unusual colors were meant to awaken the unconscious mind of the viewer.
