On February 2, 2021, Amazon announced that Jeff Bezos would be stepping down as CEO and transition to Executive Chair of Amazon's board in Q3 of 2021. Andy Jassy, who is currently CEO of AWS, will replace Bezos as CEO of the company.

With a potentially groundbreaking union vote set to begin next week, Amazon is ramping up its anti-union PR campaign at its Bessemer, Alabama warehouse. Nearly 6,000 Amazon warehouse workers will begin voting on February 8th on whether to join the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, which would be the first successful unionization of an Amazon warehouse and a major victory for the labor movement.

Amazon is fighting tooth and nail to stop it: Employees have been ordered to attend anti-union meetings where managers sow doubts about the unionization drive and refuse to answer questions about the benefits of union membership. One worker who attended said that they “present anti-union propaganda thinly veiled as factual information.”

It’s no secret that Amazon is vehemently anti-union. The company has fired workers for organizing walkouts, trained managers to quash any hint of labor activism, and built an elaborate surveillance network to keep an eye on labor activism in its warehouses across the globe. And that’s not to mention its hefty PR machine, which it revs up every time workers begin to organize. I stand in solidarity with the Bessemer workers taking on Amazon and its dirty anti-union tactics. If they vote to unionize, it will have a domino effect and encourage workers in all other Amazon warehouses to unionize. The stakes couldn’t be higher.
